According to researchers, energy-saving light bulbs release cancer-causing chemicals.
German scientists claim that extended contact with the EU-imposed bulbs may pose a health risk after finding that they emit poisonous substances when switched on.
Although it’s common knowledge that if these new “green” bulbs break, unsafe amounts of mercury are discharged, experts have now found out that they also release several cancer-causing chemicals.
These harmful chemicals include phenol – the poison that the Nazis used to eliminate concentration camp victims – as also the toxins styrene & naphthalene, which are discharged in the form of steam when these bulbs are turned on.
Scientists advise against keeping the bulbs on for a long time, especially in close proximity to a person’s head. In the case of such carcinogenic substances, it’s important to keep them at a safe distance from people.
These bulbs may be particularly harmful if placed all night close to a child’s head or used for long periods by grown-ups to read.
Tests reveal that the materials used in making these lamps may be responsible for their harmful side effects.
Electrical smog tends to develop around these lamps. They must be sparingly used and should not be placed near the head or used in unventilated places.
The EU aims to phase out by next year end ‘normal’ incandescent bulbs as they attempt to reduce carbon emissions.
