Buddhist Pali Chants


1. Salutation:

Namo Tassa Bhagavato Arahato Samma Sambuddhassa

Homage to Him, the Exalted One, the Holy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One.

2. Homage to the Buddha

Iti pi so Bhagavâ Araham Sammâ sambuddho

Such indeed is the Blessed One, Exalted, Omniscient,

Vijjâ-carana sampanno Sugato Lokavidû

endowed with knowledge and virtue, well-gone, Knower of the worlds,

Anuttaro Purisa-damma-sârathi

an Incomparable Charioteer for the training of individuals.

Satthâ deva-manussânam

Teacher of gods and men

Buddho Bhagavâ-ti

Enlightened and Holy.

3. Homage to the Dhamma 

Svâkkhâto Bhagavatâ Dhammo

The Dhamma of the Blessed One is perfectly expounded;

Sanditthiko Akâliko

visible here and now; not delayed in time;

Ehi-passiko opanâyiko

inviting one to come and see; onward leading to (Nibbana);

paccattam veditabbo viññuhi ti

to be attained by the wise, each for himself.

4. Homage to the Sangha

Supatipanno Bhagavato sâvaka sangho

Of good conduct is the Order of the Disciples of the Blessed One.

Uju pati-panno Bhagavato sâvaka sangho

Of upright conduct is the Order of the Disciples of the Blessed One.

Ñâya patipanno Bhagavato sâvaka sangho

Of wise conduct is the Order of the Disciples of the Blessed One.

Sâmîci patipanno Bhagavato sâvaka sangho

Of dutiful conduct is the Order of the Disciples of the Blessed One.

Yadidam cattâri purisa yugâni attha-purisa-puggalâ

That is to say : the Four Pairs of Persons, the Eight Kinds of Individuals;

Esa Bhagavato sâvaka sangho

this community (Sangha) of the Blessed One’s disciples

Âhuneyyo Pâhu-neyyo

is worthy of gifts, is worthy of hospitality,

Dakkhi-neyyo Añjalikaranîyo

is worthy of offerings, is worthy of reverential salutation,

Anuttaram puññakkhettam lokassâti.

as an incomparable field of merit for the world.

5. The Three Refuges

Buddham saranam gacchami

I go to the Buddha for refuge.

 Dhammam saranam gacchami

I go to the Dhamma for refuge.

Sangham saranam gacchami

I go to the Sangha for refuge.

 Dutiyampi Buddham saranam gacchami

For a second time, I go to the Buddha for refuge.

Dutiyampi Dhammam saranam gacchami

For a second time, I go to the Dhamma for refuge.

Dutiyampi Sangham saranam gacchami

For a second time, I go to the Sangha for refuge.

Tatiyampi Buddham saranam gacchami

For a third time, I go to the Buddha for refuge.

Tatiyampi Dhammam saranam gacchami

For a third time, I go to the Dhamma for refuge.

Tatiyampi Sangham saranam gacchami

For a third time, I go to the Sangha for refuge.

6. The 5 Precepts

Pânâtipâtâ veramani sikkhâ padam samâdiyâmi

I take the precept to abstain from destroying living beings.

Adinnâ-dânâ veramanî sikkhâ padam samâdiyâmi

I take the precept to abstain from taking things not given.

Kâmesu micchâ-cârâ veramanî sikkhâ padam samâdiyâmi

I take the precept to abstain from sexual misconduct.

Musâvâdâ veramanî sikkhâ padam samâdiyâmi

I take the precept to abstain from false speech.

Surâ meraya-majja-pamâ-datthânâ veramanî sikkhâ padam samâdiyâmi

I take the precept to abstain from distilled and fermented liquor that causes intoxication and heedlessness

7. Offering of Light

Ghana sârappa dittena - Dipena tama dhansinâ

With lights brightly shining, abolishing this gloom,

Tiloka dipam sambuddham - Pûjayâmi tamo nudam

I adore the Enlightened One, who dispels the darkness (of ignorance).

8. Offering of Incense  

Gandha Sambhâra yuttena - Dhûpenâhem Sugandhinâ

With perfumed incense, made from fragrant substances,

Pûjaye pûjaniyam tam – Pûjâ bhâjana muttamam

I honour the Exalted One, worthy of respect, who dispels the darkness (of ignorance).

9. Offering of Flowers   

Vanna gandha gunopetam - Etam kusuma santatim

This mass of flowers, fresh hued, fragrant and choice

Pûjayâmi munindassa - Siripâda saroruhe

I offer at the sacred lotus-like feet of the Noble Sage.

Pûjemi Buddham kusumena nena - Puññena metena ca hotu mokkham

I offer Thee, Lord Buddha, these flowers. May this virtue aid in my emancipation.

Puppham milâyâti yathâ idam me – Kâyo tathâ yâti vinâsa bhâvam

Our bodies undergo decay, even as these flowers must fade.
