Maternal Obesity May Affect Fetal Iron Status & Brain Growth

A study by the University of Wisconsin-Madison has found that newborns of obese pregnant women are likely to be iron-deficient, which could affect their brain development.

In a pregnant woman, iron is transferred via the intestine to the placenta, but nothing is known about how maternal obesity affects fetal iron status.

Newborn iron status is critical as 50% of the iron required for the infant’s growth is acquired before birth.

In non-pregnant adults, poor iron absorption is linked to obesity which hampers the transport of iron via the intestine, and experts believe diabetes could play a role

The researchers found evidence of iron deficiency in newborns of obese women and these findings are of serious concern as iron deficiency in newborn is linked to impaired brain growth.

While doctors are uncertain why obesity during pregnancy constitutes a risk factor for impaired iron status at birth, experts believe it’s possibly due to fat cells generating the production of several types of inflammatory compounds, some of which hinder the ability to absorb iron. And if the mom is absorbing less iron, her baby too will obtain less as well.

Another possible reason is that obesity during pregnancy usually results in large fetuses, too large for the amount of iron they receive.

Fat Resurfaces After Liposuction

Who wants to diet & exercise when there’s liposuction? In the U.S., this flab-busting procedure has become the most sought-after plastic surgery with surgeons removing fat from the saddlebags and love handles of almost half a million patients every year. But recent research has found a downside: fat that’s easily siphoned off tends to reappear over time elsewhere on the person’s body.

A study conducted by the University of Colorado found that all the fat sucked out through liposuction returned within a year in new places.

Obesity researchers say the body “defends” its fat. If you shed weight, even by dieting, it returns. And, if fat is sucked out with liposuction, even if it is just a pound, it still returns, but in other places.

The reason why fat doesn’t simply return where it was removed is probably due to liposuction destroying the structures under a person’s skin where fat cells reside.

Experts say the body tends to control the number of fat cells as diligently as it controls the amount of fat. Fat cells die & new ones are born all through a person’s lifetime. They live about 7 years.

Skin Cancer Risk From Flip-Flops, Baseball Caps

Experts say though flip-flops & baseball caps are inexpensive, convenient & have a casual charm, they may pose a hidden skin cancer risk.

Researchers from Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, Ill, say most skin cancers develop on the parts of a person’s body that are constantly exposed to the sun.

Flip-flops expose the tips of your ears & baseball caps the tops of your feet to sun damage, making them potential areas for skin cancers.

Earlier, before flip-flops & baseball caps became popular, people going out on summery days traditionally sported broad-rimmed hats & shoes or sneakers that provided better skin protection.

But now the tips of the ears & the tops of the feet have not much protection. Besides, people using sunscreen often overlook those areas when applying it.

The researchers say you can reduce the risk of developing skin cancer by adopting the following precautions:

* Apply an SPF 15 sunscreen

* Don wide-brimmed hats, long-sleeved shirts & pants

* Avoid the sun between 10am – 3pm

* Apply a higher SPF sunscreen when you’re at higher altitudes

* Avoid sunbathing

* Avoid tanning salons

Poachet For Perfect Poached Eggs

Poachet For Perfect Poached Eggs

It has never been easy to make the perfectly poached egg until now – recently inventor Howard Gold has created a foolproof device to make this possible.

The Poachet resembles a ‘teabag-like’ pouch and is made of a semi-permeable papery fabric & tolerates contact with water. It’s quite different from the available poaching devices created from synthetic materials.

It works just like a teabag and the egg is held perfectly in shape while it cooks.

All one needs to do is open the Poachet & set it in a small glass, with its open end up; the egg is cracked into it and then the bag is put into boiling water.

The surface tension makes it to seal itself during boiling to keep the egg from spilling out. It’s ready in 6 minutes and can be ladled out and upturned to release the egg.

Priced at £2.99 for a 20-pack, Poachets have turned out to be so popular that in just 2 months over half a million have been sold.
