Hot Dogs Up Cancer Risk by 21%

According to the American Institute of Cancer Research, consuming 50 gms of processed meat everyday – about the amount one hot dog contains – ups the risk of developing colorectal cancer by 21 per cent.

Hot dogs have a low nutritional value, but are high in salt and this could lead to hypertension & heart disease.

Research links processed meats including deli meats, sausage, ham, bacon & pepperoni to colorectal cancer.

Additionally, processed meats are known to increase the risk of heart disease, diabetes & other types of cancer.

Processed meat consumption also has been linked to an increased prostate cancer risk.  By having an extra 10 gms of processed meat everyday the risk of prostate cancer goes up by 10%.

Furthermore, studies have shown that high processed meat consumption in kids could result in developing type 2 diabetes, leukemia and ovarian cancer.

Sun Exposure Of 3 Hrs Daily Halves Breast Cancer Risk

Women who spend 3 hours everyday in the sun can reduce their chances of developing breast cancer by 50%.

University of Toronto researchers observed that being outdoors helps stimulate the production of Vitamin D, the ‘sunshine vitamin’ & exposure to sunshine for twenty-one hours every week between April & October significantly reduces the chances of developing a tumor.

Although people get Vitamin D from foods like milk, eggs and fatty fish, around 90% is generated in the skin by UV light from the sun.

Lab tests show that breast cells can convert vitamin D to a hormone having anti-cancer properties.

An Inflatable ‘Sleep Tie’ Lets You Nap At Work!

Now, Japan’s fatigued businessmen can take a quick catnap at the office – thanks to a necktie that doubles up as a pillow.

The novel “Nemuri Tie” – which in Japanese means Sleep Tie – is a unique inflatable device that allows drained office workers to snooze in comfort & style, using the sleep tie to pillow their heads.

It appears like a regular tie but features a concealed air vent discretely placed at the back of the neck, which inflates the tie like a pillow when you blow into it.

The sleep tie is crafted from silk & special micro fibers, which help cool the skin during the oppressive summer humidity.

Designed by KTM Co, the Sleep Tie is targeted at office workers & is now on sale for $ 20.

Chewing Gum Helps Cancer Patients Recover Quicker

British surgeons are prescribing sugar-free gums to bowel cancer patients to help them get better faster.

Doctors at a London hospital believe that chewing sugar-free gum helps get a patient’s digestive system back to regular working order much faster after surgery.

A study has revealed that after surgery, patients who were prescribed sugar-free gum were discharged from hospital 2 days earlier than patients who weren’t prescribed gum.

Earlier studies have shown that chewing gum aided new mothers recuperating from caesarean sections and also patients undergoing a stomach operation, who tend to suffer from excruciating cramps until digestion gets back to normal.

University College London Hospital team is advising patients scheduled to undergo bowel cancer surgery to carry with them sugar-free gum, to be chewed thrice a day, for 1 hour, after their surgery.

One of the things that slows down recovery from surgery is when patients get an ileas - where the bowel goes to sleep. It appears that chewing gum stimulates the saliva, which triggers the production of enzymes in the pancreas, which in turn stimulates gastro-intestinal activity.

Women Sitting For Over 6 Hrs Daily Have 40% Increased Risk Of Early Death

According to a new study, sitting for over 6 hours every day may shorten life & can’t be reversed by exercise.

Women who sit for over 6 hours daily are 40% more likely to die than women who sit less than 3 hours a day.

The American Cancer Society researchers say the figure is about 20 % for men.

Prolonged sitting increases risks of heart disease, diabetes, obesity and depression.

Besides, extended periods of sitting can result in significant damage to health that no amount of exercise can reverse.

This finding places sitting down for lengthy periods in the same slot as smoking.

People with desk jobs have double the risk of developing a kind of colon cancer.

Government health recommendations suggest at least thirty minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity, five days a week or twenty minutes of vigorous-intensity activity, three days a week.

Some workplaces are seeking to overcome the health problems of prolonged sitting down by setting up low-speed treadmill desks.
