University of California researchers in collaboration with Samsung have developed a new technology that generates odors to match television images. Viewers can actually smell what’s occurring on television.
The team has shown that it’s possible to create “smell-o-vision” by developing a compact box that fits on the back of a TV, capable of generating thousands of different scents, conceived to match what’s unfolding on TV.
For instance, if people are having pizza, the viewer gets a whiff of the pizza emanating from a television or cell phone.
The odor emanates from an aqueous solution like ammonia, which produces an odorous gas when it is heated via a slender metal wire by an electrical current.
The heat creates pressure, causing a small hole in an elastomer to open, discharging the scent, which is measured by the detector.
And when odors emanating from the television start to fade, the odor-producing device can be replaced just like an ink cartridge on a printer.
