‘Talking’ Cars Could Cut Motorway Pile Ups

Talking cars would soon turn into reality with researchers developing new software that would enable vehicles to talk to each other while on the road

Scientists from the University of Bologna, Italy have developed a computer programme, which allows cars to “talk” & know what was taking place on the road miles ahead.

The app lets cars stay constantly in touch with each other. Tests suggest it can cut motorway crashes by 40%.

By allowing car-to-car communication, we can know what’s happening kilometers ahead – whereas existing technology lets cars to identify an obstacle just when it’s physically right before them.

The cars read each other and are aware of the speed and direction that all the other vehicles are traveling & they also are familiar with their transmitting capacity.

This entire information is updated almost every second & the frequency is optimized in order that it does not slow down the system.

“Talking” is done using acceleration sensors fitted into cars that activate an alarm alert in abnormal conditions like when an automobile is involved in a mishap.

When a car involved in a crash experiences an abrupt change in acceleration, the sensor captures this change and alerts drivers and cars traveling to the same location.

This alarm would be relayed down the series of automobiles so they could stop safely a long way before they approach the mishap site.

The new application can be directly integrated into a car’s dashboard or in a satnav.

The ultimate objective is to connect all vehicles on the road via wi-fi - either by equipping vehicles with wi-fi-enabled sensors, or by downloading the software on to a smartphone.

High-Speed Nonstop Trains Enabled By ‘Moving Platforms’

Regardless of how rapidly a high-speed train goes, it still needs to decelerate to 0 mph in order to pick up & drop off passengers. A UK-based designer has found a solution to this problem – he has envisioned a way by which trams would ‘dock’ with speedster trains, allowing passenger-transfer on moving trains.

Designer Paul Priestman’s ‘moving platform’ concept is that of a high-speed train that travels non-stop with passengers boarding the train by means of ‘feeder trams’ that do all the stopping and starting.

The tram-like trains pick up passengers and then speed up & connect to high-speed trains, allowing passengers to change trains via a docking station, while both trains travel at the same speed.

The revolutionary new concept developed by design agency Priestmangoode will save time that’s wasted in slowing down & halting at various stations.

Miniature Drone Helicopter Developed By Mexican Scientists

Mexican scientists have built a miniature drone helicopter that’s fitted with artificial vision & can track a moving target, sight fires as well as support search & rescue operations.

Cinvestav’s International Mixed Unit designed the prototype, which measures fifty centimeters in length by fifty centimeters in height and weighs under 1 kg.

The miniature helicopter has a video camera that allows it to check risk areas like pipelines, electrical installations, roads or inspect crops.

The miniature vehicle can be airborne for twenty minutes and attain a height of thirty meters. It’s guided by positioning sensors programmed beforehand with artificial vision algorithms.

The miniature helicopter’s altitude, shape segmentation & recognition sensors can all be programmed.

The helicopter can follow and photograph a moving target, and relay them in real time to a cellular phone or computer.

This miniature Mexican drone helicopter carries a price tag of 20,000 – 25,000 pesos and has the capability to hover over a particular spot.
