Listeria-Tainted Cantaloupes Behind Deadliest Food-Borne Outbreak

Cantaloupe listeria is behind the deadliest recorded outbreak of food-borne illness in the US with 29 people now dead.

According to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), the number of infected people has risen to 139 in 28 states. The contaminated musky melons are from Jensen Farms located in Holly, Colorado.

The Rocky Ford-brand cantaloupes were recalled on September 14, and no melons under the recall are still available in stores.

Deaths have also been reported in Louisiana, Indiana, Maryland, Nebraska, New Mexico, New York, Texas, Oklahoma and Wyoming.

Listeriosis infections can cause stiff neck, fever, muscle aches, vomiting, confusion and headache; the most severe complications are sepsis, a potentially fatal blood infection, & meningitis, inflammation of the membrane surrounding the brain.

Planking Is Passé, Owling Is The Hottest Online Craze!

Looks like the wacky online craze for planking has ended; owling is the newest trend spreading across workplaces globally.

Owling, thought to be of Australian origin, consists of nothing more onerous than squatting on one’s haunches & gazing into the middle distance, mimicking the nocturnal birds.

People then click photos of themselves & post them on social networking sites.

Hundreds of youngsters in Australia, America and more recently Britain, are hooked onto the latest ‘owling’ craze.

This bizarre trend is a development of the ‘planking’ craze where people would take snapshots of themselves lying face down in odd locations.

However, in recent times ‘planking’ has gotten increasingly mainstream – and hence less popular for trend-conscious Internet users.

Chefs at Alameda County Fair have created a record breaking 777lb hamburger.

The huge 777lb burger, which established a new world record for the largest commercially available hamburger, was cooked using a single massive beef patty.

It contains 1,375,000 calories, sufficient to feed one person for almost 2 years. A forklift was employed to place the world’s biggest hamburger on the scales.

Nick Nicora of Ovation Food Services & Brett Enright of Juicy’s Outlaw Grill spent over 15 hours creating the enormous patty, topping it with 50lbs of cheese, 30lbs of lettuce, 20lbs of onions and 12lbs of pickles.

The gigantic meal beat the current record of 595lbs held by Chef Events Canada.

Pieces of the mega-hamburger were sold for 99 cents each at the fair, with all the proceeds going to the Alameda County Food Bank.
